Steven Teng holds a Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree from UNSW, graduating at the top of his cohort with Excellence and was featured on the Dean's List for achieving a High Distinction average, and has completed his Bachelor of Music (Performance) with violin pedagogue Dr Robin Wilson at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music as a University of Sydney Entry Scholarship holder. He also completed advanced piano and pedagogy study with Peter Wang of Con Brio School of Music. Since 2020, Steven is an accredited teacher and full membership holder of the Music Teachers' Association of New South Wales. Steven has worked extensively as a violin, piano and theory teacher for school aged children and adults, and has also taught as a classroom teacher in selective high schools and private schools. On top of teaching at his private studio, Steven is a probationary AMEB strings examiner and Music Master at Sydney Grammar School, teaching classroom music, violin and musicianship.
Steven was the Associate Dean of the Con Brio School of Music for ten years. During this time, his teaching was recognised through the school's winning of the AMEB most outstanding studio shields for many consecutive years in a row, 2015 - 2019. This award recognises the strongest exam results across the whole state for that year. Steven also led masterclasses for students and pedagogy workshops for teachers. Since 2017, Steven has been a senior examiner for Con Brio Examinations for Piano, Violin and Viola, an online examination platform.
Steven takes pride in his student's result. Students have gained their Diplomas with Distinction, Distinction results (A+) in grade and certificate exams and also High Distinction results (95 – 100%) in their theory exams. On top of instrumental tuition, Steven is experienced in the HSC syllabus for all levels of music with students gaining Music 2 state rankings, Band 6 for Music 1/2 and E4 for Extension, and ENCORE nominations in performance and composition, representing the top standards across the state.
Steven's students have also been awarded full music scholarships to prestigious private schools, such as Pymble Ladies College, Ravenswood School for Girls, Meriden, Wenona, Tara Anglican School for Girls, Barker College and Knox Grammar. His students have also gained entry into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music University and High School for further advanced musical training.
His students have gone to win many 1st prizes from a range of different eisteddfods. Stevens patience and preparation for students have allowed them to also take out the title of a champion through success in Eisteddfod championships.
While at the Sydney Conservatorium, Steven gained High Distinction across all his Harmony and Analysis studies and Advanced Harmony subjects and is very experienced in teaching theory/musicianship, preparing students for the aural and general knowledge components for practical exams.
As a performer, Steven was the winner of the 2011 Edna Wilde Scholarship for most exciting performance for two or more instruments at Ryde Eisteddfod, with his triumph documented in Ann Howard's book 'Eisteddfod to Stage'. Steven also won the 2010 Galston Eisteddfod Instrumental championship, where his performance at the award ceremony received a standing ovation. In December 2012, Steven gave a Recital in Taipei, Taiwan as a featured artist for the MIKI corporation.
